Some interesting turn-taking examples from this week’s Prime Minister’s questions.

Example: Corbyn (LO) reacts to chamber

LO: John emailed me to say the prime minister solemnly  
     declared on national television
Chamber member: solemnly
LO: shortly before the last-
    yeh solemnly and I’m solemn as well
      ((gestures to member))
    shortly before the last general election

SP: Jeremy Corbyn
LO: mister speaker (.) if the prime minister (.)
   cannot answer now on tax credits
   and the devastation that is doing
    ((general noise from chamber))
       ((8 sec pause))
LO: thank you (.) and the deva-
       ((laughter from chamber))
       ((2 sec pause))

Example: Intervention from Speaker (SP)

PM: our plans will mean hundreds of millions of pounds
    extra to cut energy costs
   ((general noise))
    now honourable members opposite
SP: or- order
PM: yes
SP: order (.) I apologise for having to interrupt
    the prime minister
    mister Blenkinsopp
    ((2 sec pause))
    a statesman like demeanour
    is what I would hope for
    from someone who served with distinction
    in the opposition whips office
    calm yourself or take a sedative
